From time to time I take advantage of my unique perspective on the state of affairs in the U.S., given that I no longer view and gather information from inside the U.S., but rather from my perch here in Toronto, Canada, the most culturally and ethnically diverse city in the world.
After having spent thirty years in the U.S., and having the world's news/current events bombarding me solely through the all-American lens otherwise known as the U.S. media, these past three years in Toronto have provided me with a much more realistic picture of how the U.S. is regarded around the world by more civilized nations like Canada, Britain, Scandinavia, western Europe, etc.
The picture is not a pretty one. I quickly learned that U.S. based media outlets are largely full of shit, for want of a better term. Nothing down there comes close to the level of intellectual reporting, relative objectivity and news gathering of, say, BBC or CBC. Even Al-Jazeera is more journalistically honest than the best the U.S. has to offer in the form of CNN, Fox News and others. There are many reasons for this, the most obvious and glaring being the fact that private enterprise controls the U.S. news machine, and the private sector corporate behemoths only care about one thing -- MONEY. In fact, they are legally obligated to do whatever it takes to increase the share price of their stock. The result??? News outlets that feed the masses the kind of information that keeps them glued to the screens -- the TV, the smartphone, the tablet, whatever. It's all contrived bullshit, typically engineered to keep the public in fear of the unknown.........so that they'll keep watching to see what happens next -- glued to the little screens.
This ends up creating a populous that in aggregate enters more queries on Google and Twitter for Miley Cyrus 'twerking' on the same day the U.S. is contemplating going to war in Syria. A mass of people who seek comfort at places like 'Fatburger' and Las Vegas. Hookers and cocaine and guns and gangbangers. Rich white kids buying 'music' created by street-corner drug dealers who fancy themselves as 'artists.' Cyberbullying, suicide, entrenched racism that has nothing close to a solution in any of our lifetimes, and a litany of deep-rooted problems that nobody in the U.S. has the balls to properly address. Political correctness is prioritized above reality, security, education, healthcare. All the politicos care about is that they don't offend the sensibilities of one group or another. In other words, they care more about 'hurt feelings' than actual democratic progress and success. A bunch of fucking babies.
The most important news item for most Americans - this is a fact people. |
No-one really cares about this stuff, except for those of us who have lived it. If there's one thing the majority of the U.S. is good at, it is 'looking the other way.' Pretending that bad shit doesn't really happen in the cities and towns and nice neighborhoods where people get quietly fucked in the ass by the government at an alarming rate. Some people are waking up to the bullshit, and civil unrest is just around the corner.
But, unfortunately, those in the U.S. who hold the reins of power (i.e., the ones with the money) are very well-practiced at looking the other way. No sense of obligation whatsoever to help humanity. A twisted form of pseudo-patriotic narcissistic nationalism that's infected much of the rest of the country. Albert Einstein once said that "nationalism is a disease - the measles of humankind." And you know what happened back in his day when nationalism reared its head and the selfish collective consciousness of nations simply 'looked the other way' in the face of injustice?? The Holocaust happened. The U.S. simply looked the other way for YEARS as the Nazi's tossed millions of innocent children into gas chambers and ovens before taking any action against the German barbarians.
Now, the powers at be pretend to be all up in arms about a few hundred kids gasping for air on Youtube following the Syrian regime's chemical warfare debut. Obviously it's a horrible tragedy for even one human to suffer in such a way, but give me a fucking break. This is all about appearances and nothing more. If there were no cameras or Youtube, nobody would give a shit, and that's the plain unadulterated pathetic truth.

I've come to accept that I live in a world where the law of the jungle applies at every level. And with the exception of some truly wonderful humanitarians like Bill Gates and some other billionaires with a conscience, this world is full primarily of humans who only care about themselves or their direct blood relatives. So much for humanity. 'Humanity' doesn't exist as far as I'm concerned. And it's sad.
And by the way, here is how the more respectable news sources around the world feel about the 'exceptional' USA, and I'm simply repeating what I've observed: they see, with a few obvious exceptions of course, but they still basically think the following about 'Americans': fat, greedy, stupid, dirty, messy, largely uncultured, obsessed with celebrity, completely unaware of what goes on in the rest of the world, dangerously patriotic, violent and nationalistic.
You know what? With the small exception of some of my friends and family in the U.S. and the relatively few notable intellectuals who populate a country of over 300million fat-asses, I happen to agree with the rapidly declining level of respect that much of the more civilized western societies attribute to the United States of Bullshit.
So, U.S.A., you took away my liberty and permanently altered my life. I have some plans to take some things from you over the next ten years or so......and you can't do fuck-all about it. I'm outta your jurisdiction. So have a nice fat, greedy, gun-crazed, intellectually challenged, Honey Boo Boo life. We will soon meet again. And the rest of you in the U.S. -- the people who actually have at least half a brain -- I expect you will do what you do best...........look the other way. Another mass shooting today in Washington......but who cares, Miley is twerking on Twitter. It's the American way.
For anyone who disagrees with me, as always, I welcome you to go fuck yourself. I'm not looking for feedback.
